SALISBURY – Low-income families in Rowan County can apply for assistance to cover the cost of home heating starting Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Persons aged 60 and over and those receiving disability benefits and services can also apply through the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services. All other families can apply from January 3 to March 31.

The federally funded Low Income Energy Assistance Program provides eligible households with a one-time payment to offset the cost of heating during cold weather months. Depending on the main source of household heat, the payment will be $ 300 to $ 500.

To qualify, a person must:

• Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-U.S. citizen who meets the eligibility criteria

• Have an income equal to or less than 130% of the federal poverty line

• Be responsible for the cost of their heating

Rowan County households can apply for energy assistance by:

• Go to the E-Pass on the County website (www.rowancountync.gov/710) and download the Energy app, print, fill out and mail or send to the agency.

• Receiving paper applications in the lobby of the Rowan County Department of Social Services at 1813 E Innes Street, Salisbury NC 28146.

The office will accept applications from families with a person aged 60 and over or with a disability from December 1-31, with the exception of December 23, 24, 27 and 31.

Rowan County Chamber of Commerce adds office staff by hiring Yalanda Edwards

SALISBURY –

The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce has strengthened its office staff by hiring Yalanda Edwards as the new office manager. A Rowan County native, Edwards comes to the organization with more than 20 years of experience in office management and accounting. She officially started in this position in September.

“The room is honored to have Yalanda Edwards join our staff. “She is an asset to the organization and she is doing a wonderful job,” said House President Elaine Spalding in a press release.

Edwards is a graduate of Salisbury High School and has a master’s in business administration from Strayer University with a focus on human resource management. She joins the four-member staff of the Chamber with Member Services Director Erica Church, Administrative Assistant Tina Jamison-Cowan and Spalding.

Rowan Chamber is a non-profit business advocacy organization with over 800 member firms. Membership benefits include business advocacy, community development, professional development, leadership training, membership rebates and networking events.

Rowan Chamber will host Bishop Tim Smith at the December Power in Partnership

SALISBURY – The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce will host Bishop Tim Smith during his December Power in Partnership breakfast on Dec. 16 at 7:30 a.m. at Trinity Oaks.

Smith is a bishop in the Lutheran Synod of North Carolina. He is a graduate of Salisbury High School and a Morehead researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His father was the superintendent of schools in the city of Salisbury and his mother was a teacher. Smith played college youth basketball under coach Roy Williams and was music director for Clef Hangers at UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 1982. He then attended the Gettysburg Seminary, including a semester in Washington, DC at Catholic University. and an internship at the American Church in Berlin and graduated in 1986.

Smith received a divine degree in service from Drew University in 1992 and served three parishes – St. Paul-Startown (Newton, North Carolina), Grace (Boone, North Carolina) and Redeemer (Atlanta) – before becoming bishop. He is married to Wendy Weisner Smith, and they have three grown children and four grandchildren.

Power in Partnership is open to the public. For non-room members, the cost is $ 25; for room members the cost is $ 15. The reservation deadline is December 14 until noon.
